Not All Candles Are Created Equal
Candles have been a part of human life for thousands of years — for light, for ritual, for ambiance. But today's candle market is flooded with options, and not all of them are as cozy and harmless as they look. Many conventional candles are made with paraffin wax, synthetic fragrances, and lead-core wicks that release harmful chemicals when burned.
If you love candles but care about what you're breathing in your home, it's time to understand what makes a candle truly natural — and why it matters.
What's Wrong with Conventional Candles?
Most mass-market candles are made from paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct. When burned, paraffin candles can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene and toluene — chemicals also found in diesel fuel. While the levels are generally low, burning paraffin candles regularly in an enclosed space can contribute to indoor air pollution.
Conventional candles also frequently use synthetic fragrance oils, which can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemical compounds. For people with allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities, synthetic fragrances can trigger headaches, respiratory irritation, and other reactions.
What Is Soy Wax?
Soy wax is a natural, renewable alternative to paraffin, made from hydrogenated soybean oil. It was developed in the 1990s as a cleaner, more sustainable candle-making material, and it's become the gold standard for natural candles.
Why Soy Wax Is Better:
- Cleaner burn: Soy wax burns cleaner than paraffin, producing significantly less soot and fewer toxins. This means better air quality in your home.
- Longer burn time: Soy wax burns slower and cooler than paraffin, so your candle lasts longer — giving you more value for your money.
- Renewable and biodegradable: Soy is a renewable crop, making soy wax a more environmentally responsible choice than petroleum-based paraffin.
- Better scent throw: Soy wax holds fragrance well and releases it gradually as it burns, filling your space with a consistent, pleasant scent.
- Easy cleanup: Spilled soy wax cleans up easily with soap and warm water.
Understanding Clean Fragrances
The fragrance in a candle is just as important as the wax. "Clean fragrance" refers to scent formulations that are free from harmful chemicals — things like phthalates, parabens, carcinogens, and other potentially toxic compounds.
Clean fragrances can be derived from natural essential oils (like lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus) or from carefully formulated synthetic fragrance compounds that have been tested and verified to be free from harmful ingredients. The key is transparency — knowing what's in your candle's fragrance and being confident it's safe to burn in your home.
What to Look for in a Clean Candle Fragrance:
- Phthalate-free
- Free from carcinogens and mutagens
- No harmful VOCs
- Transparent ingredient sourcing
The Wick Matters Too
A truly natural candle also uses a clean wick. Look for candles with cotton or wood wicks, which burn cleanly without releasing heavy metals. Avoid candles with metal-core wicks, which can release trace amounts of lead or zinc when burned.
Cotton wicks are the most common in natural candles — they burn evenly, don't mushroom excessively, and produce minimal soot. Wood wicks add a pleasant crackling sound reminiscent of a fireplace, making them a popular choice for a cozy ambiance.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Natural Candle
- Trim your wick. Before each burn, trim your wick to about 1/4 inch. This prevents excessive soot, mushrooming, and uneven burning.
- Let it pool. On the first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the container. This prevents tunneling and ensures an even burn throughout the candle's life.
- Don't burn too long. Limit burns to 3–4 hours at a time to prevent overheating and extend the life of your candle.
- Keep away from drafts. Drafts cause uneven burning and excessive flickering. Place your candle in a stable, draft-free spot.
- Store properly. Keep candles away from direct sunlight and heat, which can cause the wax to soften and the fragrance to fade.
